survey of all osprey nests in the watershed by boat, mapping them in Google Earth. These nests are found on navigation markers, man-made platforms, trees and other structures. Our tracking system records key data, including nest locations, return dates of resident birds, mated pairs, eggs laid, chick counts (June), surviving juveniles (August) and migration departures to South America. To accurately monitor nest activity, we use a mirror pole to observe eggs and young chicks.

We actively engage the Severn watershed community to promote stewardship and foster a deeper appreciation for Osprey and the region’s biodiversity. Through our Osprey Stewards program, waterfront homeowners with osprey nests on their shoreline help document annual nesting activity, from mating and egg-laying to chick development. We also train volunteers to safely observe and record nest activity using our data sheets, contributing valuable insights to our conservation efforts.

We foster a deeper understanding of the Osprey’s life cycle and its vital connection to the health of the Severn River. By educating the community, we encourage stewardship of the watershed to protect both the river and the Osprey that depend on it. Our programs contribute to osprey research along the East Coast and highlight the challenges they face during migration and winter in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as their remarkable survival strategies.
