Conduct an annual comprehensive inventory of all osprey nests in the watershed by boat and map all nests in Google Earth. Our nests are found on navigation markers, man-made platforms, in trees and on other objects. This Osprey census tracking system records: nest location, return dates of resident birds to nests, mated pairs, eggs laid, number of chicks born (June), surviving juveniles (August), and dates when birds leave the nest and migrate to South America. We use a mirror pole to look into the nest to count eggs and young chicks.

We have enlisted a cadre of waterfront homeowners with Osprey nests on their shoreline to serve as “Osprey Stewards” to document annual nest mating, egg laying and chick development. We also train volunteers to safely observe and record nest activity in our datasheets.

Advance citizen understanding of the life cycle of the osprey and their dependence on the health of the Severn River. Encourage citizens to protect the Severn River, and by extension the osprey, by becoming stewards of the watershed. EDUCATE our community about Osprey research throughout the East coast and their migration marvels and survival challenges during the winter in the Southern hemisphere. Create a training and education program, particularly with underserved students, on osprey nesting, breeding, and fishing behavior.
